Andrew Carpenter, Background Vocals

Andrew’s journey with music began in a surprising way. Diagnosed with autism in the fourth grade, he graduated high school in 2015 and joined the Transitions program to gain support for life after school, including internships, mentoring, and classes in independent living, academics, and career skills. That fall, he enrolled at Fulton-Montgomery Community College to study Liberal Arts while exploring career options.

In July 2016, Andrew’s instructors at Transitions overheard him singing in the hallways between classes. At the same time, Flame was holding auditions for new members. Encouraged by his instructors, Andrew tried out—and has been singing backup for the band ever since. Being part of Flame transformed him. Once shy and quiet, he became a charismatic and confident performer who loves singing in front of people and spreading joy through music.

Flame has opened doors for Andrew he never could have imagined, including traveling to Italy to perform at the 19th International Festival of Different Abilities. His growth and dedication have been recognized on a global stage—he received a Yes I Can Award from the Council for Exceptional Children in 2018, one of only twelve young people worldwide to earn the honor in the Transition category.

Thanks to Flame and Transitions, Andrew’s life has been filled with growth, adventure, and success. His passion for music and performance continues to shine, and he can’t wait to see what new opportunities the band will bring next.
